Is jewellery part of a lifestyle?

What is the purpose of jewellery? what does it make you feel like? can it be used to transform ugly duckling into beautiful swan or old scruffy jeans into shorditch trend icon? I think it can do all of these things and more, jewellery to me is wearable art, an expression of how you are feeling or how you would like to feel, access to beauty, glamour something which makes you feel appreciated and can be appreciated in its own right. My jewellery is the first ice breaker when you walk into a room and don't know anyone, a distinctive way of expressing yourself or a subtle way of carrying something sacred to you with you throughout your day. Jewellery for me is about a whole experience.

A new way of working, looking carefully at each of my pieces I have begun to place them in context for my buyer. Of course when I design a piece I visualise the whole lifestyle that goes with the idea, the perfect shoes the perfect dress how i would fix my hair but how do you share that visual image with the customers? Well here is my first attempt using etsy treasury.

Feeling at home in the Hague - almost!

So it has been six weeks and a day since we got off the plane to start our new life in the Hague. A very hectic 6 weeks full of lots of new tastes, sounds, smells, sights and emotions.

Bitterbollen - should I be worried when Dutch people tell me its better not to ask what its made of? Is it the Dutch equivalent of Haggis?

Slagroom - Another one of those Dutch words that doesn't translate well into English.

We seem to have slowed down in comparison to the manic London lifestyle, yet I have done more in the last 6 weeks that I have done for ages.

  • Moving house twice,
  • learning how to assemble flat pack furniture, that's if you can carry it up the 3 flights of spiral stairs which seems to be a normal feature of Dutch houses!
  • An intensive 2 week course in Dutch which ended with a trip around the Marithuis museum to see a girl with a pearl earring.
  • Expat fair - feel at home in the Hague
  • discovering an English supermarket and paying a ridiculous amount of money for Yorkshire tea bags
  • an interview - and a painful wait to see whether or not I got the job

Some frustrations, mad as it may sound I hate not having a job, not having the responsibility, not having colleagues, not speaking to the public and answering what at the time seemed like ridiculous questions, not getting up and feeling smart in my nice suit and purple high heels.

Having to reinvent myself to some extent has been a challenge, why did i come to the Hague? why now? what sort of career do I want? do I want to work full time? part time? What do I want to spend my time doing? what do I want to get out of this experience? Who do I want to spend time with?

Today's thoughts

I have been thinking about how to revamp my etsy shop to make it more reflective of how I really feel when I create a piece of jewellery and to help my buyers be aware of the pieces story. But trying to capture these stories on paper is not that easy.. whilst thinking about these things I stumbled upon the following blog post http://www.etsy.com/storque/handmade-life/brooke-berman-a-collector-of-images-9572/ Brook Berman: A collector of images. I realised that I like Brook have been collecting images most of my life and my thoughts and processes are all captured in those pictures, napkins, bookmarks and other nic-nacs i picked up on route.

So why are these books important to me? well as Brook says they provide me with:
  • a visual record
  • they honour the process of making something from nothing
  • they help me to make connections
  • they help me to capture moments
  • to collect the wisdom of others
Perhaps from now on my product descriptions should include snippets from my collection of images and the gut reactions to the places, people and processes I experience on my journey

My big move

I have moved from London to live in the Hague in the Netherlands. My etsy store is currently on vacation until all my supplies and furniture arrives but I will soon be back up and running. In the mean time if you have any special requests please let me know on jch@hotmail.co.uk and I will start my new designs
